DEVELOP CHANGE CAPABILITY

DEVELOPING YOUR TEAMS TO STEP UP TO THE CHALLENGE OF RETAIL IMPROVEMENT

FINDING EFFECTIVE RETAIL PROJECT MANAGERS

You’ve turned your strategy into an achievable roadmap already. You’ve got a series of projects which each need to be landed to deliver the whole programme of change.

You need effective and efficient retail project managers to take action. There are several ways that you may have set up your project management teams:

Maybe you’ve seconded your team from stores to head office for this important project. These people often are passionate about the business with energy to drive progress. But they have no direction and no real idea about how to make change in a political business environment. They are not project managers.

Perhaps your team are operations managers, blending the day job with project work. It is always challenging balancing the demands of day to day work with the need to do project work. These people are also not project managers.

It’s possible that you’ve promoted junior staff into project management roles. They were probably analysts, project coordinators or in another administrative-type role. The shift up to project management can feel like a big step – particularly if the project is actually important and critical to the business. While they’ve seen projects, these people have never fully taken on that project manager role.

The final option is that you’ve taken existing project managers or hired externally. Your existing project managers are great but you only have a limited number. Meanwhile, your external hires don’t understand the organisation, the culture or the background to what’s going on. These people are project managers and can support others at the expense of working on their own projects.

FINDING THE RIGHT METHOLOGY

You know that you must develop your team’s capability to get them fit for the future. After all, your programme and projects are likely to be important to the future success of the business.

So you must develop project management capability. There are plenty of training courses – just try typing “project management training” into Google.

But are the different options available suitable for retail? Are they going to learn to take a pragmatic approach to deliver change – without a mountain of project paperwork? Many approaches such as the public sector focused PRINCE2 may not be suitable for the fast paced retail environment and other options may be suited to other industries – such as Lean Six Sigma originating from manufacturing environments. Will a ‘one size fits all’ approach for project management be suitable for your unique situation?

Also, will your project managers be armed with actionable tactics to take on the challenges facing retailers – and the pitfalls facing retail project managers?
